Free State Info
The Free State Province is the landlocked geographical Heart of South Africa. Bounded by the Orange River in the South and the Vaal River in the North, this land is vast and beautiful. It is agriculturally rich and is home to the most productive gold and diamond mines in the World. The Free State is made up of the following 5 regions; Motheo, Xhariep, Lejweleputswa, Fezile Dabi (Northern Free State) and Thabo Mofutsanyana.

Fezile Dabi (Northern Free State) The Northern region of the Free State Province is separated from the Gauteng Province by the impressive Vaal River and Vaal Dam. The Vaal Dam is considered to be a yachting and boating mecca and is also known as the Highveld´s Inland Sea. This region of the Free State generates South Africa´s principal agricultural production.
Lejweleputswa This north-western area of the Free State Province was formally known as the Goldfields due to the vast gold deposits found beneath its surface. The current name of Lejweleputswa refers to the grey stone of the rock linked with gold. Some of the World´s deepest mines are situated in this region.
Motheo The Motheo Region is home to Bloemfontein, the Capital of the Free State Province. This region borders the neighbouring Kingdom of Lesotho and is considered to be the economic and industrial heart of the Free State Province.
Thabo Mofutsanyana Formally known as the Eastern Free State, this region is one of great contrasts. The Drakensberg and Maluti Mountain Ranges join ranks in the eastern part of this Province and form a rugged sandstone barrier. The Thabo Mofutsanyana region is renowned for the rustic charm of its towns and the spectacular backdrop of vistas.
Xhariep The Xhariep Region is named after the great !Garib River (Orange River) which forms the southern boundary of this district. The Gariep (Xhariep) Dam is situated in this district and is considered to be the largest man-made dam in South Africa.
